Anyone who's watched American TV recently must have noticed the hilarious ads for new, industry-created ailments like 'restless leg syndrome' (yes, in America you need drugs for that), 'generalized anxiety disorder' (ie. chronic bad mood), 'erectile dysfunction' [ED] (ie. bored with spouse and cant get it up), PTSD (for civilians), BPH, PMDD & so on...
America is one of the only countries where such ads for prescription drugs are legal. The only real requirement of the companies is that they offer a disclaimer about any possible side-effects in the ads. My favorite is in an ad for viagra in which the disclaimer announces at the end of the commercial in a rapid fire voice that is so fast it's almost subliminal: see your doctor immediately for erections lasting more than 4 hours. In adition to the ads, the industry spent more on lobbying last year (2007) than any other indtustry.
